#30under30 is a stupid monument to depressingly false notions of meritocracy.
This year they want to highlight "diversity" but the very notion of a framework for prodigious succcess, & the assertion of a global timeline for "early achievement" is antithetical to diversity.

By ignoring the possibility that it might take someone 30 years to extract themselves from an impossible situation, 30 years to even be able to take their shot, it will always HUGELY FAVOUR the Privileged over the Talented. The fundamental concept of 30 under 30 is flawed.
Competitions like 30 under 30 also routinely pedestalize abusers...Take for instance one of this year's "winners"
Cecilia d' Anastasio made a name as an investigative journalist in games partly by non-consensually publishing lurid details of sexual assault survivors' experiences

By sharing irrelevant but explicit aspects of rape by a famous game composer, Kotaku & Cecilia profited. By attaching themselves to the *prodigious 30 year olds* by pedestalizing Cecilia, Forbes profits. It's a bunch of vapid spectacle masking the true cruelty of "meritocracy"
If you want a LOT more details and proof about this particular person's abuse and cruelty during her stint as a games journalist, please check out this thread and the linked blog posts

To pull this back a bit in search of a conclusion...
I lost a lot of time in my 20's fretting about stuff like #30Under30 & *none of that angst helped me co-found my studio* or do good activist work in my community. It didn't help me *transition at the same time,* either

Do yourself a favor and ignore this "prodigy porn." Even if you win. Especially so, in fact. Keep doing you, either way.
Also, be wary of smiling folks who are "interested in your story" or who are "inspired by your success at such a young age"

In my early 20's, getting chosen as a 30 under 30 was one of my deepest wishes
These days, I'm truly glad I did not win. I am glad I was forced to accept my own pace, my own story.
I *did* have many "wishes" come true, big & small, & I wouldn't trade a single one for 30u30
