A lot going on in this thread that, uh, "argues" for teaching kids books that are more relevant to their lives than the classics, and here's what strikes me: this professor who is also an award-winning writer doesn't actually offer a positive alternative to teaching the classics https://twitter.com/DavidOBowles/status/1333636964956987393
Forcing kids to read work well outside their proximal development harms them, YOU DISGUSTING WORMS; literature not written in the present-day vernacular consigns children of colour to failure, YOU FOOLS; teachers know pedagogy. This guy has a DOCTORATE IN ENGLISH!
Great, maybe he can give examples of some non-classic books that have gotten kids reading and have fostered a love of literature in them? No, we just get a list of four titles with no context other than "you haven't heard of these books and I have, so shut the fuck up"
This shit plays well on Twitter but good luck selling the PTA on "take a MOTHERFUCKING SEAT & leave my people alone"
