Rough COVID stats in Indiana today. I am working in the ER today and also working w/ dedicated teams to help get us to the other side of this pandemic when sometimes the battle feels lost. 1/
It’s never too late to save lives. Even today. I have a couple of reflections and suggestions as a combo health care worker, public health practitioner, policy maker & government official. It's my birthday, so these are also my gift requests. 2/
1. Individual behavior shaming isn’t a great way to actually change behavior. Collective support to make sure that simple public health measures have broad acceptance and are easy to do is a better way. That’s on us in government to lead w/ the help of public health science. 3/
2. We generally gravitate toward a clear good guy / bad guy scenario. Let’s make the virus the bad guy and not each other for the rest of the winter. Winter is hard enough. 4/
3. There are a few additional competing pandemics to this virus that are hampering a successful battle: racism, misinformation, scientific mistrust, a crisis in mental health/substance use disorder and economic peril. 5/
4. Those are tough, but while we are in battle mode, why not work on all of them? We can, but only together. 6/
5. Volunteer & give if you can. @FeedINsHungry is a great start. College students - check out some additional opportunities here: https://redcap.uits.iu.edu/surveys/?s=JAN77JY7NP 7/
Reinforcements are coming with vaccine delivery. Dr. Fauci said it well yesterday - now is the time to fight harder, not give up. For just a little while, let’s come together by standing a bit apart, putting on our masks & rediscovering our hearts. Go Hoosiers.
