While we wait for the 4A/3A/1A football state finals news conference to start in about 30 minutes, thought I'd jump into just how chalky these playoffs have been.

The 10 state finalists are a combined 85-1. The lone loss of the bunch was Marion's to Kingstree back in early October.
They are all No. 1 seeds, which meant they won their region titles and then defended their home turf in the postseason.

The 10 finalists played a total of just five road games in the first three rounds of the playoffs.
Two of those belonged to T.L. Hanna. A.C. Flora, Daniel and Lake View each went on the road one time each.

Camden was supposed to have a road game at Oceanside Collegiate before the Landsharks forfeited that game and Camden automatically advanced.

Of the 70 total playoff games across the five classes, there were a total of just 10 seedings upsets (not counting the predetermined home sites between like-seeded teams).
That's about 14% of the games.
Last year, with the standard playoff format, the upset rate was 24%.

In 2019, of the 10 teams who made the state finals...
No. 1 seeds: 6
No. 2 seeds: 2
No. 3 seeds: 2
This year, only four non-No. 1 seeds even made the Upper/Lower State finals.
Shaving the playoffs down a round this fall cut definitely into the Cinderella effect.
