I have been working in nonprofits for almost 10 years at this point & I really & truly hate #GivingTuesday When I first began my NP career, seeing checks coming into my multi-million dollar NP and getting paid less than $13/hr & facing eviction felt like a slap in my face
It also feels so self-serving when I knew that the work we did was year-round and yet ppl sprang into action bc of this targeted campaign & to ensure that they got these tax-deductible donations in before the end of the year.
As someone who works at a tiny NP now, seeing the vast difference in what folks donate to already well-resourced orgs (both in terms of donations but also thru foundation & govt funds) vs. what theyre willing to give to small orgs who a $1000 donation could be a gamechanger
And this isnt a dig on big orgs who do good work, but formally participating in a #GivingTuesday or a #DoMore24 requires a fundraising team to execute AND the ability to give a larger % of any money raised to United Way to participate. This is a burden for small + BIPOC NPs
All that to say, yes I hope ppl are giving today and bussin those wallets open, but I hope that y'all consider cashing out some GoFundMe's & Mutual Aid Funds first--then think about some small orgs that are doing great work on shoestring budgets. I have a few suggestions:
If supporting Black mamas & fighting back against maternal mortality is your jam then @MamatotoVillage is an amazing org that supports Black mamas & whose work is critical when systemic barriers continue to be prevalent for Black mamas in DC.

If Black youth getting free and using their voices to make changes in your community feels like liberation to you then @BlackSwanAcad does that work AND more! Black youth deserve to lead the way for the future they deserve.

If you care about DC streets being safe for marginalized genders then go ahead and start dropping coin to @SafeSpacesDC who challenge the status quo on the daily & are doing the work of making DC safer from the bars, to the streets, to the metro.

I gotta sneak my org in here bc truly, we need to see more Black budget advocates. This budget here is our money and I wanna see Black ppl lifting up our voices & asserting our right to our tax $ the way old white men do. This here DC budget is OUR money

Another small & mighty organization who's out here doing the work to center immigrant voices & has been a FORCE in ensuring that excluded workers arent forgotten is @mlovdc Major shout out to @MacaraegMegan who has been DOING THE DAMN THING. http://mlov.org
Last, but certainly not least is @dcmuslimjustice whove been organizing to dismantle structural, institutional, & gendered Islamaphobia. Plug into their work addressing safety thru the lens of Muslim communities who've been overpoliced & oversurveilled.
