So, back in 2016 when I first started entering contests I created a spreadsheet. I built it to track for five years.

The sheet is now coming to an end.

Now, does that mean I’ll stop entering all contests...

Probably not, but I entered far fewer in 2020 then I did in 2019. /1
Which was less than 2018.

As I look into 2021, I have a few I entered this year that won’t announce until next.

But, the contest route hasn’t helped me break in. I was warned, and I should know by now to ALWAYS take @BogeyGuyC’s words as gospel. :)

I don’t know that I’ll stop entering altogether, but there will certainly be a lot less entries going forward. The bigger, more prestigious contests, those that offer actual benefit, and by that I don’t mean money.

I’ve got to take a much more proactive approach to this. /3
This isn’t to KNOCK contests. Because I have been TAUGHT so much by so many of them.

I’ve met great people who have gone out to their way to encourage me, offer advice and support.

And as I said, there are few contests I can’t imagine not submitting to.

This tweet chain is me calling my shot and making a decision to change how I’m doing things.

The contest circuit is, in my opinion, a great way to cut your teeth, learn if you are moving in the right direction where you scripts are formatted and structured correctly.

And figure out where you rate against the thousands of other writers out there using contests for the same purpose.

I did okay in the last several years, but what I want is to write stories and scripts, not win contests.

So, that’s my random thought for the day. :)
