THREAD: I'm watching Home Alone for the first time in YEARS, maybe over a decade. It's set up SO well, everything is perfect. I particularly love the way the McAllisters are portrayed as kind of rich entitled assholes. Kevin IS a little bastard, not a legend.
It's proper good writing to make it 100% believable that this family managed to leave one of the kids behind. Everything lines up. I think this John Hughes guy was pretty good tbh.
And blah blah to be completely realistic obviously Kevin goes to a nearby house immediately in a panic...or breaks his neck going down the stairs on that sledge...and Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci fully die obviously...but I buy Home Alone totally.
And Kevin being a little shit really helps sell the notion that he could outfox a couple of burglars. He's even initially terrified of them, we don't start with him going "you guys give up or are you thirsty for more?".
The McAllisters are an allegory for white America needing to learn they're not invincible. Home Alone 2 proves they never did. This is chilling. #HomeAlone
Btw, it goes without saying that Catherine O'Hara is incredible in this and it should have been obvious to everyone thirty years ago that she was a GOAT.
I think the burglars are a couple btw.
The John Candy cameo is wonderful. What a loss!
Hey, talking of loss, Roberts Blossom's Marley is frickin' perfect. That's not in there for kids, obviously, and kudos to John Hughes for keeping that storyline. It has more pathos and depth than some Oscar bait and it takes up, like, 10 minutes of screentime.
Btw, Anna Kempner hasn't seen Home Alone before and she's feeling absolutely every injury to the Wet Bandits. Trust her to be on the side of the working class, bleeding heart socialist loony lefty cuck.
