i really wish i saw more focus and effort and attention paid to pedagogy on the left. by the nature of what we organize to do and who we organize to do it with, we are constantly at risk for brain drain, folks with essential knowledge dropping out or being snatched away
so many organizations without a strong internal knowledge base, even just the internal knowledge of all actions the org has undertaken since it's beginning - and it makes me fret, friends, it makes me worry. the way we keep having to reteach ourselves from scratch doesn't work!
we need to get better at recognizing the need for the retention and transmission of knowledge. we need to get better at saying to people: "okay, you just trained to run the sound board on this event. now i need you to sit down with one of our doc writers and create a manual."
We need to start expecting that, as you train yourself to learn a new skill for yr organization, you take notes on HOW you trained yourself, what resources you used, how you found those resources, what they lead you to. Leave breadcrumbs, others are going to NEED to follow you!
And if yr in a leadership position in an organization, I really think you need to be asking yourself: you have an array of volunteers who each bring a set of skills to the organization. What are you doing to ensure that your org has access to those skills when the people leave?
