We're a club in crossroads. Arteta himself said we need 5-6 players. Multiple contracts expiring in the summer + potential sales. COVID didn't allow us to make sales we need. Next summer is the actual fresh start for Arsenal Football Club whether we persist with Mikel or not.
Personally I would persist with Mikel. I agree with the profiles of players he is looking at and the overall vision. He needs to be allowed next 2 windows to bring those players in and implement the style. I feel sorry for him when you look at the state of our current squad...
People will say Arteta showed faith in these players. But what other choice does he have? If we're able to find buyers and sell, we'd do that. We didn't even get him the other midfielder (Aouar) he wanted... I really sympathize with Mikel. Players the problem 100%
When a manager is coming out and saying he needs 5-6 players, he obviously doesn't think high enough of the squad. He recognizes that. The speed of the rebuild is contingent on player sales + how much we're willing to spend. We didn't really do enough in the summer.
But strengthening a squad alone isn't enough - the speed of doing so is vital. Even if you make an improvement from the previous season, the way the Premier league is today, other teams will simply strengthen more than you and we cannot allow that to repeat in January and summer.
Look at how Chelsea moved this summer. Lampard was completely outcoached by Arteta in the Cup final. After the first 10 mins, we were the superior team. But look how they strengthen in all areas this summer. We've spent 0 on transfer fees in attack. What did you expect?
You can say Arteta must be less structured etc. but the moment we play with 'freedom' and we saw this under Freddie last season, we get destroyed in transitions and concede huge numbers in shots. Bottomline: Its a horrible team for anyone to manage until signings are made.
