The real genius of the Tories is their ability to motivate the left to keep voting Labour.

After decades of fake Tory Commons majorities under first past the post, I'm amazed this still works.

1/
Central to the Tory's strategy is exploiting the basic human desire to "win", or more precisely to avoid "losing".

This is called loss aversion. The reason the left fail to understand this is that they simply cannot comprehend that the Tories would wish them to vote Labour.

2/
The Tories don't really fear a Labour government because they know that under first past the post it's essentially impossible to implement a radical progressive agenda such as universal basic income.

3/
The only thing the Tories fear is that the left will abandon Labour in large numbers, thus risking a generational shift to parties fundamentally committed to proportional representation, such as the Greens, SNP, Plaid etc.

4/
The Tories know that Labour will never implement proportional representation: that's why they allow Labour such massive levels of funding under Short Money.

Don't fall for the theatrics at PMQs: the Tories need Labour so that they can maintain their stranglehold on power.

5/
The Tories also want to keep channeling money into the military, nukes, and selling weapons to countries like Saudi Arabia. And they know Labour will continue supporting this as long as they keep their snouts in the trough of Short Money.
