The Bootstrap narrative is a poverty narrative.

Rich families don’t deprive their kids to “teach them self sufficiency”. They bankroll them.

Poor families teach their children *~self reliance~* to prep for a lifetime of being screwed by a system that will keep them in poverty.
I had parents that insisted I be completely financially independent of them by age 18. They positioned it as making sure I could take care of myself as an adult. The reality was they couldn’t afford to take care of me after 18.
Now that I have a child and I understand the economics of privilege & generational wealth (and have seen firsthand that wealthy parents provide financial support to their adult children for the ENTIRETY of their lifetimes) I’m going to be paying for stuff for my child forever.
