There are really dangerous lies spreading #onhere about who benefits from in-person school in NYC. Here's the truth: 46% of Black and 47% of Latino kids are going to school. Of the 300,000 kids who were going to school, the vast majority were POC. /thread https://gothamist.com/news/nyc-schools-updates-october-19-2020
Check out the interactive map in the link above: the school district with the highest percentage (54%) of kids attending school in person is District 24 (Corona, Queens). D24 is 86% non-white and 75% low-income.
The largest elementary schools in Elmhurt, Queens have huge rates of in-person attendance. As we all know, Elmhust was hit hardest by COVID. At PS 89, there are 881 students attending in person, and 473 remote. PS 89 is 2% white, 81% low-income, and 43% English language learners.
At PS 19 in Elmhurst, 1,035 kids are in person, with 559 remote. PS 19 is 1% white, 89% low-income, and 52% English language learners.
White students comprise only 15% of the DOE population. Yes: among that tiny sliver, white kids have disproportionately selected in-school education. But they still make up a clear minority of who is actually attending school right now.
There's this other lie that those who support reopening school are white parents. It's just not true. I'm looking at the 15,000+ signatures on our petition, which have name and zip code information. Huge numbers are from zip codes where almost no white people live.
When you close NYC public schools, you are disproportionately harming Black and Brown kids and families. /end
