Latest @ONS data https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/bulletins/deathsregisteredweeklyinenglandandwalesprovisional/latest 12,535 deaths registered in E+W in week ending Nov 30th. 5-year average is 10,380, max over last 10 years was 10,882 in 2019. Unlike any recent year. Graph by @Henry_Jon
2,697 deaths had Covid on the death certificate. 88% ‘from’ Covid as main underlying cause, only 12% were ‘with’ Covid as a secondary cause. Covid currently causing more than 8 times the number of deaths than flu or pneumonia (280 in week)
Encouraging that deaths that not caused by Covid slightly below 5-year average - suggests collateral damage of measures against pandemic have not yet had major impact on overall mortality (although competing with some deaths brought forward by first wave)
Between Sept 5th and Nov 20th, 12,907 deaths involving Covid registered in UK, roughly 3,000 since then, making 16,000 so far in the second wave. Sadly, prediction that second wave means tens of 000s of Covid deaths looks like it will be fulfilled, likely >20K by Christmas
Once again, there were over 1,000 additional deaths in private homes compared with normal, a 40% increase. This seems to be a long-term change in the way people are dying in this country, and deserves close attention
