Lakhamandal, Dehradun an ancient Shiva temple, meaning lakh of Shivlings, looks like Kedarnath peak. Shivling is unique, shines when water is poured & has a carving of Shakti on base. ASI declared as Monument of National importance. 2 Shivlings of diff colour/shape are at gate
Dark green Shivling belongs to Dwaparyug & red to Tritiyayug. Disfigured vigarahas of Manav & Danav(dwarapalakas) at entrance. Some say they're Arjuna & Bheema. It's a belief who dies are placed here. Manav puts life back to purify soul & Danav takes soul to Vishnu's abode
A legend says this is world's first Shivling. This Shivling appeared between Vishnu & Brahma to stop their fight over superiority, when they couldn't find origin & end of Shivling. Thus Vishnu & Brahma were humbled & were the first to worship Shivling.
Another legend says this was found by a cowherd whose cow drained her milk on Shivling daily .One day he followed her & found this temple. Her footprints are seen on every stone & mountains around. Two Nandi can be seen at both side of gate.
Unmissable Mahabharata connection says this was established by Yudhishthir during their agyaatvaas. Duryodhan tried to kill Pandavas here by making them stay at LakshaGriha, house of Wax. Luckily Pandavas escaped through a Cave called Dhundhi Odaari, meaning misty or foggy cave.
