This is pathetic and disingenuous. Also, peer pressure is actually an effective way of ensuring adherence to social norms. If you don't want your neighbors to think less of you, you probably comport your behavior to align somewhat with their expectations and they do the same. https://twitter.com/AviWoolf/status/1333771267095326721
If you go around screaming obscenities at old ladies in public I'm probably going to judge you and I'm probably going to feel morally and socially superior to you as a non-lady-screamer-atter. To an extent, you have the liberty to scream gibberish at old ladies, it's just bad.
If someone chides you for screaming at the old ladies would we say they're just interested in signaling their own superiority or might we understand there interest to be more about that nebulous concept "the common good?"
Because if we're saying mask wearing and the shaming of noncompliant folks in 2020 is about signaling virtue and nothing more then we're basically writing off the entire concept of "the common good" because I'll tell you what, the law isn't the major enforcer of that principle.
Peer pressure, social norms, common courtesy, manners, etc. are the main enforcers of "the common good" as it plays out in real life, IMHO. I'm not a philosopher and I haven't read as much philosophy as many of y'all on here but I observe things and I think that's what I observe.
