Grand Blue really really hit me in my feels and I didn’t expect it whatsoever. I may have took a completely different message from this than most people but for me the more ‘serious’ moments and gentle character interactions really hit me from no where.
The comedy is utterly brilliant, so genuinely funny and consistent the way through. It’s used perfectly and consequently means the genuine moments of friendship, love or character interactions have serious weight and emotion behind them.
And that’s what gave me this almost gentle melancholy feel about Grand Blue. That idea of young people meeting, finding a common interest, building friendships, experiences, memories, love, living your life as a free and young adult. As I get older, that’s going to dissapear.
Your youth is your prime, and I have always been someone who can see the end of the road. I’ve always been the one to have this feeling inside of knowing something I love or enjoy will one day end and it’s a constant soft and sad pain that stays with me.
But I guess, that’s the beauty of life isn’t it. It makes you want to love harder, live properly and have no regrets. That for me is what made every little serious moment in Grand Blue stand out that much more and really resonated on a level that to be honest I wasn’t ready for.
I guess I saw myself in a lot of the interactions and softer elements of the series, especially sections where the characters understand this won’t last forever. That hyper awareness of itself the series had made the romantical elements so believable and had me so invested.
If you have not read Grand Blue Dreaming, please do. It’s really funny, I see a lot of people just call it Grand Blue, and it sounds silly but for me the ‘Dreaming’ aspect of a young adult living their life is probably the most important and beautiful section to me.
