It's December!
That means if you're anything like me, you've already started thinking about your 2021 and how you want to improve yourself next year.
One thing I've learned in the previous years is that New Year's Resolutions do not work.

That means if you're anything like me, you've already started thinking about your 2021 and how you want to improve yourself next year.
One thing I've learned in the previous years is that New Year's Resolutions do not work.
But there is something that does

New Year's Resolutions are normally very specific, because that's what we've heard works.
SMART objectives and all that.
You make a resolution to go to the gym 3 times a week, or lose 10 pounds, or read a book a month.

You make a resolution to go to the gym 3 times a week, or lose 10 pounds, or read a book a month.
These things don't work, because as soon as you start failing, you give up entirely.
There are specific things to do and specific goals to meet, so there is a definition of failure. If you don't meet those goals, you fail. And after failing it's very difficult to keep going.

There are other ways to go about New Year's Resolutions, like making your goals more realistic, or redefining your objectives after a failure.
But even this is difficult. It makes things complicated, and it doesn't remove failure.

Introducing... THEMES!
Instead of "I will go to the gym 3 times a week", make 2021
"the year of working out" or "the year of health."
This comes with so many pros
Instead of "I will go to the gym 3 times a week", make 2021
"the year of working out" or "the year of health."
This comes with so many pros

1. It removes the definition of failure
There is no specific goal to meet in the year of health. The only way to know if you've failed is by evaluating at the end of the year. There is no time you'll think "I failed" and therefore give up or lose motivation to continue going.

2. You'll do other things to help in your resolution
Going to the gym 3 times a week, or losing 10 pounds, is not everything you have to do to be healthy. Having a "year of health" incorporates so much more than that - food, mental health, skincare, working out, etc.

3. A theme will come into your choices
If you have a choice between going up stairs or an escalator, you may choose the stairs because you're in your year of health.
This isn't something you consider if your resolution is to go to the gym 3 times a week.

4. A theme can change over the course of a year
You have no idea what's going to happen in 2021. None of us could've predicted a global pandemic in 2020.
If 2020 was your year of health, you'd take the lockdown to learn healthy cooking or at-home workouts.

If 2020 was your year of health, you'd take the lockdown to learn healthy cooking or at-home workouts.
But if at the start of 2020, you'd made a resolution to go to the gym 3 times a week, you just... wouldn't do it. Because it literally wouldn't be possible to do.
I've been doing this kind of thing for a few years now, and it has worked out really well!
This year was a career year, and I used COVID to shift into using social media to further my career.
I wouldn't have done that if I had a traditional resolution!

Of course, if you're a dedicated individual who understands the reasoning behind their resolutions and can easily change them & do other things to support them, then you don't need themes.
But generally resolutions are against human nature. And they fail more often than succeed.

CPG Grey has an amazing video about this that you should definitely check out. https://www.cgpgrey.com/blog/your-theme
My theme in 2021 is going to be Financial Independence.
