Striking line in this @RHarrabin story today that @CambridgeEcon analysis suggests recent climate promises from the PM wld mean - if delivered - that the UK is on track for 59% cut by 2030 (i.e. to meet UK's existing 2030 climate target). https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-55138338
BUT…. the existing 2030 target is out of date since it is not aligned with Net Zero. It is due to be revised upwards. Announcement on this due within days from the Prime Minister. @RHarrabin says @theCCCuk advice expected to be for a new number in high 60s by 2030.
Finding these extra carbon cuts in the decade ahead likely to require extra measures to curb pollution from land use sector & heavy industries. Makes case stronger for ban on burning peatlands & to begin green steel production. Sure lots more ideas in @theCCCuk report on Dec 9.
Today @lesliehook & @PickardJE reporting No10 looking at a big uplift in carbon cutting ambition for the decade ahead. Bold new 2030 target would see approx 50% increase in pace of decarbonisation in UK to achieve overall 69% cut by 2030. https://on.ft.com/2JiuRc0
Given the existing policies announced so far expected to deliver approx 59% by 2030, an extra 10% on that over a decade sounds ambitious but doable. Importantly, similar uplifts from EU & other major economies expected in next few weeks. UK, as host of COP26, right to act first.
