A few thoughts on nominations. In 2017 I received my first nomination, for the Pushcart Prize, from wonderful @riggwelterpress Since then I've been nominated a few times for awards like Best Small Fictions, the Biffy 50 & Best Microfictions. Every year I see someone reference 1/
that article where some guy made fun of writers who excitedly share the news that they've been nominated. "It's only a nomination" "There are so many journals out there nominating" etc. To that I say, Phoeey. Writing is hard, rejections are legion & a nomination means that /2
a journal loved your writing so much that not only did they publish it, they nominated for an award. The editors spent time sifting through everything they published that year, they debated, (they may even have engaged in some fisticuffs -ahem) and they decided that out of all /3
pieces they published that year, YOURS was one of their very favourites. That alone IS cause for celebration. To me, a nomination is similar to a longlisting, and we sure (rightly) celebrate those. Sure it's maybe a longshot that we will get any further than the nomination /4
but we got nominated! It's an honour that should be celebrated, ESPECIALLY IN 2020 So please, tweet your nominations, REVEL in them, and if I see your tweet, I'll be sure to congratulate you. Because you deserve it! /fin
