My thoughts on The Queen's Gambit, since it's still fresh for Hot Takes
: I thought it was 'meh', but kudos for making people want to play chess

It felt like pure fantasy in her almost frictionless successes playing the game, but it didnt really serve as escapism since it's coupled with some of the more tough-to-watch interpersonal drama
I've also heard some MtG players drawing comparisons to the tournament scene (which, granted, I was never at a high level of), which I can see in the physical sense! I especially think the first tournament felt very close to my tournament experiences.
But past that, I don't know how much I can relate to it
She's just kind of... accepted for her skill after that first tounament. She doesn't have to actively fight those biases any more because they respect her skill, but that like... doesn't happen, in my experience

It felt very "man writes womans' experiences" to me, is what im really trying to say.
The parts that hit closest for me were the moments with Harry towards the midpoint. They felt complex and muddy and pretty true to how players can end up imprinting their own desires onto women who just want to play the game (if that makes sense?).
Anyway, I think there is still space for a show that looks as beautiful as this and tells stories about powerful women in competitive spaces. I just don't think that The Queen's Gambit is one for me, and I hope to see more in the future.
