We all know Indian law is very complex and as a law student, there are many laws which people are not aware of.

1/ Women can lodge complaints through emails - A woman has all the right to lodge FIR via email or registered post if she is not able to visit the police station.
2/ She has to send an e-mail or registered post addressing the senior police officer of the level of Deputy Commissioner or Commissioner of Police.
3/ If you have a son and you are looking to adopt another well you can't. According to Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Act of 1956, married couples cannot adopt two children of same sex.
4/ Any individual is free to drink and use washroom at any hotel - According to Indian Sarais Act, 1867 any individual can ask for water free of charge from any hotels at any time for themselves and their pets.
5/ Furthermore, he or she can use the washroom for free, and no one can stop them.
6/ If your cylinder explodes you are entitled upto â‚ą40 lakhs cover - Many of us are unaware that domestic LPG consumers are entitled to a cover of â‚ą40 lakhs cover in case of loss of life or damage to property due to cylinder explosions.
7/ If you have been fined once in the day by a traffic policeman in the day you may be excused after that but once you’re fined for it. The challan slip can get you out of being fined for the same day till midnight. Yes, but this is not an encouragement to do so. Be safe.
8/ There will be 3 months jail for Public Display of Affection (PDA) within its limits is allowed but any obscene activity is punishable by law for up to 3 months. Since the word obscene has not been defined, couples are often harassed by policemen.
9/ Male officers have no right to escort a woman but only female officers can escort (take) women to the police station. A woman can refuse (say no) to go to the police station between 6 pm to 6 am. It is said as per the Section 46 of Criminal Procedure Code.
10/ In case of serious crime, a written permit from the magistrate (a civil officer who administers the law,) is required for male officers to take her to the police station.
11/ Many people have a hobby of collecting foreign currencies. But, as per the provisions of Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 one can hold foreign exchange up to US $2,000 in the form of foreign currency notes for future use.
12/ Can a policeman fine you if you break the traffic rules?
Yes, you can be fined but if there is no traffic policeman around the place, you can be fined up to â‚ą100 and no head constable can fine you above it.
13/ As per Article 39 (D) of the Constitution of India, there is equal grant for men and women at their workplaces. This is an amazing law as all over the world women are fighting for their rights to be paid and treated equally in the working environment.
14/ Can hotels or restaurants charge more than MRP on water?
Yes, as per the recent judgement (wording) of Supreme court, a hotel or restaurant can charge you more than MRP for bottled water as they provide service. Thus, whenever you go to a hotel, be ready to pay MRP + X price.
15/ Free Legal Aid - Under the Legal Service Authorities Act, 1987 a free legal aid service is provided to all the Indians who cannot afford the hefty (heavy) fees of the lawyers.
16/ As per Section 185 to 202 of Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 you can be arrested without a warrant at the time of driving if your 100ml blood contains more than 30mg of alcohol.
17/ Can a traffic police officer take your car keys away?
As stated in the Motor Vehicles Act 1932, it is illegal for a traffic cop to take away your car keys forcefully. No police officer, irrespective of his or her rank or authority can take away your keys.
18/ If he/ she does, you have the full right to launch a Legal proceeding (case) against the officer.
19/ Flying a kite is illegal and can lead to fine and imprisonment (jail). According to Indian Aircraft Act, 1934, you need to have a permit (proof) to fly an aircraft as it can cause danger to any person or to any property on land or water or in the air.
20/ If you fly an aircraft, you will be held liable (punishable) for 2 years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to â‚ą10 lakhs. As per the act, aircraft includes balloons, whether fixed or free, airships, kites, gliders and flying machines.
21/ Zero FIR - It means that an FIR can be filed in any police station, irrespective of the jurisdictional (a particular geographic area containing a defined legal authority) limitations and location of the incident.
22/ The respective police station takes in the FIR and marks it as a zero FIR by giving it serial number zero and immediately transferring the documents over to the concerned jurisdiction.
23/ What would happen if policeman says No to file and FIR?
If a policeman refuses to lodge (file) the complaint, as per Indian Penal Code, 166 A, that officer could be jailed up to 6 months to 1 year.
24/ Can the traffic policeman fine a challan without mask?
Yes, a traffic policeman can fine you for not wearing the mask. But, as per the latest judgement (order) from the Supreme Court, You don’t require to wear the mask if you’re driving alone in the Car.
25/ But, if there are more than 1 person in the car, then you’re required to pay the challan and the amount varies from state to state.
