Thread 1/11 - Check out the latest paper from the RESOLVE team - published in @PalliativeMedJ - on understanding the processes and mechanisms underpinning the successful implementation of outcome measures into routine palliative care practice https://bit.ly/3ofQOqD
Thread 2/11 – We interviewed 63 healthcare professionals about using outcome measures, across 11 specialist palliative care services, sampled by role, experience, seniority, and setting.
Thread 3/11 – An overview of what this paper adds to our knowledge, and its implications to clinical practice, theory, and policy can be seen here:
Thread 4/11 – Through adopting implementation theory (Normalisation Process Theory), we found that processes underpinning successful implementation could be understood through four interconnecting processes.
Thread 5/11 – The first process included the extent to which those using the measures understood what they were, how/when to use them appropriately, and their value to patient care. To this end, having up-to-date training on outcome measures was important.
Thread 6/11 – The second process important to the ‘buy-in’ of implementation was building everyday organisational practice around outcome measures and adopting a collaborative approach to implementation. Having strong leaders who championed this was crucial.
Thread 7/11 – The third was having efficient I.T. infrastructure in place that allowed health professionals to easily input outcomes data onto, use them within, and extract them out of electronic systems.
Thread 8/11 – Finally, to reinforce their use, it was crucial that those using measures were provided with regular feedback of outcomes data (at patient, team, and service levels). When this did not happen, outcome measures were more often viewed as a ‘tickbox’ exercise.
Thread 9/11 – A summary of the processes that were integral to the implementation of outcome measures into clinical practice can be seen in this picture below:
Thread 10/11 – In addressing these challenges, we provide a set of questions that those who are leading the implementation of outcome measures, and those using them in everyday practice, should consider before and during implementation.
Thread 11/11 – As part of the RESOLVE project, we have developed training resources to support healthcare providers, researchers, and specialist palliative care services to better understand and implement outcome measures into practice. See these here: http://www.hyms.ac.uk/resolve-training
