Day 1 #AccessibleAdvent in #Academia
Have a chat with your students at the start of your course and let them know what accommodations you can make without official documentation e.g. using large print, a different font, a different colour

Day 2 #AccessibleAdvent in #Academia
If your office is only accessible up stairs, make it clear to students that you're happy to meet elsewhere- for me this was usually in a café or in a park in nicer weather

Day 3 #AccessibleAdvent in #Academia
Educate yourself about your institution's policies for declaring a disability- where do students have to go? How will you be informed about the adjustments students need? - Check the disability office website or ask your department

Day 4 #AccessibleAdvent in #Academia
Believe any documentation from the disability office.
" #YouDontLookDisabled!" is not helpful. Many impairments are invisible and adjustments are often very hard won, so if it's in the file, make the adjustment

Day 5 #AccessibleAdvent in #Academia
It can be helpful to explain to students that "disability" is a catch-all term, and they don't have to identify as disabled to ask for help- "disability" often also covers SpLD, mental health issues and chronic illness

Day 6 #AccessibleAdvent in #Academia
You can offer to advocate for students, e.g. if they've not heard back about an essay extension and are concerned, you could offer to check in with the office for them.
BUT, make sure to listen if they say no- agency is important.

Day 7 #AccessibleAdvent in #Academia
If you're organising a conference, think about how you're going to manage accessibility- there are lots of documents on this e.g. #DisMed's, and think about writing an equality statement. http://bit.ly/dismedaccess

Day 8 #AccessibleAdvent in #Academia
When organising an event, think about seating. This is both for panel sessions and networking- will people who sit be able to be part of the conversations? Are there enough seats for everyone? https://pppphd.wordpress.com/2017/07/12/standing-room-only-seating-at-conferences/

Day 9 #AccessibleAdvent in #Academia
[food]
Make sure there's a way delegates can tell you about dietary requirements, and think about hosting conference dinners at chain restaurants- they are often *much* easier if you have allergies as you know what you can eat

Day 10 #AccessibleAdvent in #Academia
[alcohol]
If there's a drinks reception, try to make sure there are some *nice* non alcoholic options. Also, never ask people why they are not drinking alcohol, or pressure them to drink.

Day 10 #AccessibleAdvent in #Academia
If there's space, aim to set up a quiet room where delegates can go to decompress.
This is not a space for chatting, rather a space where people can go if they need a break.
