Possibly starting this week, a thousand+ #Rohingya refugees could be moved to Bhashan Char, a remote island in the Bay of Bengal which has not yet been declared safe for living by the @UN & where many refugees are reluctant to relocate. https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2020/11/bangladesh-plan-to-relocate-hundreds-of-rohingya-to-remote-island-must-be-dropped/
Aside from the fact that Bhashan Char has not been deemed safe by the @UN, there are serious questions over this relocation process with many of the Rohingya we've spoken to not giving consent to being moved to an island they know nothing about,” says @amnesty's @OmarWaraich.
Bangladeshi authorities must allow for unfettered access to Bhashan Char for rights & humanitarian orgs to carry out independent assessments. They must cease all plans to relocate refugees until they have done so & must return all Rohingya on the island to their families.
All decisions relating to the relocation of refugees must be transparent & involve the participation of the Rohingya people. Plans for further relocations must cease at least until Bangladeshi authorities let the UN conduct an assessment of Bhashan Char. https://www.dhakatribune.com/bangladesh/rohingya-crisis/2020/11/30/rohingya-relocation-to-bhashan-char-slated-for-next-week
