what jeremy shada did and why it’s harmful: a thread
queerbaiting.
this one im not too informed about so i cannot say whether or not he genuinely queerbaited, but i did some research and it seems as though a lot of fans believed jeremy queerbaited lance from voltron.

what is queerbaiting?
queerbaiting is when a non-lgbtq+ member hints at the possibility of them, or in this case their character, being a part of the lgbtq+ community in order to appeal to the lgbtq+ audience.

why is queerbaiting harmful?
the lgbtq+ community doesn’t have a lot of representation in the media, and when members of the lgbtq+ community are led on to believe a person or character could be that representation and it turns out they aren’t it can be harmful +

to them. lgbtq+ community lacks genuine representation and lgbtq+ characters are often used as a way to say hey look!! representation!! and not to genuinely develop their characters identity and relationships. it’s even more harmful when a straight actor is alluding that +
a character he plays is part of the lgbtq+ community when they are not.
queerbaiting is controversial topic in the lgbtq+ community and some people dont believe its wrong, so take it as you will.
making fun of lukereggie shippers.
there was a whole ordeal back in september where jeremy was making fun of people who ship lukereggie, and though you could say he was just joking, he posted something not long after the situation went down, jeremy posted this on instagram +

there was one singular scene with these two, and the ship makes no sense considering she cant see them. it would’ve been different if he put out a ship that has any possibility, but the timing of the post seemed a bit bizarre considering the recent events.
its also weird how everybody else in the cast entertains the idea of certain canons. lukereggie, julynn, lukealex exes, etc, but jeremy doesnt. of course this doesn’t necessarily mean he doesnt support them, but its weird.
i just wanted to add on, i’ve never heard jeremy speak about shipping willex or julynn or lukealex exes or really anything positive about any of the non hetero couples / ships in the show, just something to think about !! this could just mean he doesnt think theyre canon, but +
if you take his past brush ups with the lgbtq+ community, its a bit suspicious.
blm.
so speaking as a black person and somebody who shares jeremy’s religious beliefs, i can definitely say what he said was extremely ignorant and tone deaf. heres his statement.
so speaking as a black person and somebody who shares jeremy’s religious beliefs, i can definitely say what he said was extremely ignorant and tone deaf. heres his statement.
as you can see he said “let us not repay evil violence with violence” and “take the high road” alluding to protesters. and to “fight racism showing the love and understanding of jesus”
why is this statement harmful?
insinuating that victims of racism should always take the high road and simply spread love and understanding is so ignorant. black people are always expected to take the high road and when we dont, we are painted as thugs and violent people. +

the insinuation that love and understanding fixes racism is not only wrong, it’s ignorant. black people have shown love and understanding for a long time, unfortunately that doesnt bring change. as a white male, his statement was hurtful and so uneducated.
the joke.
jeremy made a really idiotic joke about alex sounding terrible when alex was feeling very anxious.
jeremy made a really idiotic joke about alex sounding terrible when alex was feeling very anxious.
just want to say this is me speaking for myself and NOT owen.
as somebody who struggles with anxiety, jeremy’s joke was again, super tone deaf. nobody else in the room was joking or laughing at his joke which showed me that it wasnt a time to make those jokes. if youre a jatp stan then you know owen struggles with pretty bad anxiety +
and jokes like this when feeling anxious can be very damaging. once again im not speaking on owen and jeremy’s friendship, i just personally think jeremy’s joke was a. not funny, and b. extremely tone deaf.
at the end of the day jeremy is in a big position of privilege. he’s a white, heterosexual, cisgendered man so it’s understandable that he wouldnt be very educated on certain topics HOWEVER the fact that he continues to remain ignorant and doesnt choose to educate himself +
is very telling of his character and if you stan the sister kisser.... keep that to yourself bc that is so embarrassing.
