I moved to Austin in January of 2013. I didn’t know a single person, where to get a taco, or a good date spot.

I worked hard building a network and learning the city. Now there are tons of friends moving here, so here are my top takes of Austin (food, bars, people, etc.)

Enjoy.
I have to start with breakfast tacos, because that’s how I start most days:
- Taco Deli doña sauce is the best, but their tacos are meh
- Veracruz is the best overall. Try Migas Poblanos on a day after a few too many drinks.
- Taco Joint migas with habanero sauce is 🔥
Where to grocery shop:
- HEB
- HEB
- Whole Foods if you’re hosting and want to flex
- HEB
- HEB Plus if you want to learn how a grocery store can give you anxiety
Where to 🍺:
- East Austin is hipster college kids and wealthy 30-somethings
- Dirty 6th is blacked out college kids, out of towners, and Dropbox sales reps
- Rainey is where you take parents out, party on a Sunday, andalways get more drunk than you expected
- Everywhere else 🤷🏼‍♂️
Where to work:
- Austin is the city of sales. Google, Dropbox, Facebook, Oracle, Dell, etc.
- @rigup, @Outdoorsy, @OutdoorVoices for big co startup life
- @TheHustle, @LiveRecover, @beardbrand, @scottsflights for small startups
- Ask if they cater in Rudy’s. If they do, run.
How to feel about UT:

Yes, I know you’re from some Power 5 school, but get over it. The more you embrace the burnt orange the more fun it is.

For context, UT-Austin’s budget is equitable to Alabama, Georgia, and LSU combined.

UT is the heartbeat of the city.
Where to 🏊‍♀️ and 🚣‍♀️:
- Everything is a reservoir of CO River, but Austin’s great at rebranding
- Travis is where the big boats live. Expensive Uber
- Austin is the one with the big bridge and where houses have boat docks that cost $1M
- Ladybird is where the dogs swim and kayaks
Where to hike/be outdoors:
- Understand the term green belt. You’ll hear it all the time. Enjoy them.
- Ladybird Trail is where you go to remind yourself how active and good looking this town is
- Mueller if ya got rugrats or like to hike then eat
Traffic/driving in ATX:
- It’s really not that bad. It’s the 11th biggest city what do you expect?
- 8 years in and still get 183 and 290 confused.
- 35 always has traffic. No matter what.
- Get ready to make some u-turns after getting off the hwy. It’s just how the city works.
Local spots to eat that I love:
- Austin Seafood Market ($$)
- Red Ash ($$$$)
- Bar Chi ($$$)
- Via313 ($)
- WingzUp ($)
- Tiny Boxwoods ($$)

Austin spots started here but big now:
- @torchystacos
- @ChuysRestaurant
- @EasyTigerATX
- @EddieVs
- @kerbylane
BBQ gets its own thread. This includes sides, which are just as important:

- Is Franklin’s worth 5 hour wait? Nah. But it will be the best you’ve ever had.
- La BBQ best overall. Get a beef rib and smoked Mac n Cheese. 🤯
- Terry Black’s is great for the ease of access.
People to meet:

Grow your network. Grab a coffee or drink with these people, it can change your world.

- @dennishegstad
- @theSamParr
- @TraceWall
- @bandholz
- @nevmed
- @becsherm
- @BobbyThakkar
- @jwmares
- @jessvalle
- @JoshuaBaer
- @adamsinger
- @gaganbiyani
That’s about it. Enjoy the city. Keep it clean, be nice to people, and have fun.

And, if you’re new to town, let’s meet. My favorite coffee shop is Juan Pelota downtown and I’ll meet you there any time.
