Earlier on this snowy Michigan Monday, I spied a young woman and a small child walking beside a highway carrying a gas can. I masked up and pulled over and learned her American story. This will be a thread so scroll down to read it all.
During the pandemic, she lost her waitress job, and then was called back and lost her unemployment. Only she was not working full shifts and wasn't earning enough tips from carry out to pay her bills.
When she was finally evicted she loaded up her minivan and went camping in the back of a Walmart parking lot with her daughter. Barely enough money to eat, last night she ran out of gas trying to keep them warm.
She has a sister who lives five hours downstate who will take her in, but could not afford to send her money. Her phone was shut off for lack of payment.
I got her phone turned on, got them gas and breakfast, and gave them enough money to reach her sister but it is happening. People are starting to fall off the edge. I share this story to ask you to reach out to your friends and family. Ask them how they are.
Check-in with people you think may need a friend, see if you can be that friend. In the end, we are all we can count upon. I don't like seeing women who could be my daughter shivering in the snow with a three-year-old girl. America has to be more than this. ♥️
