We had a lot of nice words about our cider coverage this weekend, so thought today would be a good place to take stock of what we've covered so far, and where we hope to take it in the future.
We wanted to include cider in our core "trinity" with beer and wine because we feel each as so much to learn from each other, and share tangibly similar definable characteristics. And because many of our readers enjoy drinking all three.
Our initial aim was to focus directly on producers through the form of profiles, as we felt that cider as a whole was relatively unknown for people outside of its existing community, and we wanted to put a face and story to some important folks inside it.
Starting, where else, with Tom @oliverscider — the don — I wrote this article myself (Matt) as something of a statement of intent for what Pellicle is all about, but moreso than that, how British cider is changing (and has a deep desire for that change!) https://www.pelliclemag.com/home/2018/11/26/sound-vision-tom-olivers-cider-perry-getting-to-the-core
Quickly, we got @LilyWaite_ to profile @DC_cider down in London, a wonderful example of how UK cider is changing—quite literally—at kitchen level. We've loved watching DuckChicken's star rise after publishing this! https://www.pelliclemag.com/home/2019/7/15/far-from-the-tree-how-duckchicken-is-defining-urban-cidermaking-in-south-london
@niccipeet reached out telling me how much she wanted to profile cider legend Roger Wilkins, and yes, he's been written about a great deal, but we were excited to include his perspective in what is a rapidly changing scene. https://www.pelliclemag.com/home/2019/9/30/the-rough-with-the-smooth-meeting-cider-legend-roger-wilkins
We're also keen to showcase lesser known producers—and there's a lot of work still to be done here—but @Morrighani's profile of @CharnwoodCider is the perfect example of this. Seek out some Charnwood if you can. https://www.pelliclemag.com/home/2019/11/6/floating-on-a-rising-tide-charnwood-ciders-triumph-over-adversity
Amid our profiles, @Shinybiscuit interviewed cider activists Dick and Cath of @CiderBuzzMcr. Two people who are, quite literally, willing to put their reputations on the line for the advocacy of great cider. And they're just warming up. https://www.pelliclemag.com/home/2019/11/25/bread-for-all-and-cider-too-meeting-cider-activists-dick-withecombe-and-cath-potter
@LilyWaite_ turned in some more cider column inches when she profiled @RossCider, who in Albert Johnson (and his dad, Mike) have one of the most intelligent, forward-thinking makers in the country. This is essential reading. https://www.pelliclemag.com/home/2020/5/4/in-bloom-and-bough-ross-on-wye-cider-and-perry-company-in-herefordshires-wye-valley
And @niccipeet returned to cider, although away from the traditions of Wilkins, to the thoughtful modernity of @LittlePomona. What's next for UK cider? It looks like this. https://www.pelliclemag.com/home/2020/8/3/an-awakening-in-herefordshire-little-pomona-cider-amp-perry
Are @piltoncider the UK's best cidermaker? And what the hell is 'keeving' anyway? This profile from @madherbs tells the story of a true gem of the scene. Mine's a bottle of Tamoshanta. https://www.pelliclemag.com/home/2020/9/9/keeving-up-appearances-pilton-cider-in-shepton-mallet-somerset
Another maker pushing the perception of what UK cider can be is @findcider and in this profile from @helenjerome we discover what makes them stand out, and how co-founder Polly recovered from a stroke to become on the UKs best cidermakers. https://www.pelliclemag.com/home/2020/10/15/find-amp-foster-cider-devon
And just last week we published an @agladman profile of @wildingcider. Yet another *tiny* maker that's slowly changing the perception of what great British cider can be. Stunning stuff. https://www.pelliclemag.com/home/2020/11/16/there-only-apples-red-and-green-wilding-cider-in-somerset-england
What next? There are more makers stories to be told, absolutely. But we also want to talk more about the places that sell it, the orchards it comes from, and further dig into this narrative that UK cider is updating itself—and not without resistance! Maybe we'll get into that too
And Perry, obvs. That's coming *very* soon.
Not forgetting all the writers, photographers and illustrators were paid a full, fair rate for this work! If you're able to chuck us the price of a glass of cider each month to support this content you can do so via our @Patreon page:
