“Leaders and activists of these organisations insist that this kind of mobilisation is made possible by building critical consciousness about the shared problems and interests of the landless and the farmers, in particular, the small farmers” https://twitter.com/purpleremnants/status/1333054478711365633
“Some of these leaders and activists also seem to be united in their understanding that caste and class have to be grappled with together to move towards any meaningful change.” https://www.theindiaforum.in/article/agrarian-crisis-punjab-and-making-anti-farm-law-protests
“As Joginder Singh of the BKU put it, these struggles give them space and time to fight with each other but also understand each other and come closer.” https://www.theindiaforum.in/article/agrarian-crisis-punjab-and-making-anti-farm-law-protests
i liked the piece for 1) explicitly naming *some* gender dynamics playing out in the reporting, especially given how folks in the diaspora may not (get to?) pay enough attention to that 2) noting the importance of both the landless + farmers interests https://www.theindiaforum.in/article/agrarian-crisis-punjab-and-making-anti-farm-law-protests
im gonna keep whatever articles i come across and like, and put them in this thread. this piece from @KaurLifeOnline https://kaurlife.org/2020/12/05/sikh-women-protest-for-farming-rights/
from october but thought this perspective would enrich the thread https://twitter.com/navyuggill/status/1317568327917731840
i like @HarshaWalia’s thread better than mine so im just gonna leave hers here quietly https://twitter.com/HarshaWalia/status/1337879554921123840
a video from the wire & posted by dalit_journal on Instagram about the movement led by dalit landless farmers in punjab to receive the land they’re allotted by law but not distributed due to dominant caste hoarding & violence. 31.9% of punjabs pop is dalit https://www.instagram.com/tv/CJBUrt4nYT2/?igshid=1rm66bgdux2cn
truly eternal links. there is a reason so many refer to punjab as Guru Nanak’s punjab lovingly and with a particular politic. ill save my comments for those who always and primarily refer to the raj instead. https://twitter.com/Hark1Karan/status/1341870523853250561
there’s a passage in mallika kaurs recent book in which she accounts a meeting btwn dr ambedkar & justice ajit singh bains in punjab. justice says that BRA said he was in jatts punjab, and the justice responds with no baba Nanak’s punjab. and the convos tone supposedly changed.
deep deep histories and so many layered meanings in the words people use. i have no idea if that’s what’s in this speakers heart or mind, just reminded me of that passage. it’s never left me.
