From a patient perspective - some of the most comforting words a doctor can say are “I believe you”, “I don’t know yet, but am determined to figure it out”, or even “I’m sorry you are hurting”.

Too often, visits for complex problems feel like attacks on your validity as a human
There’s this troubling pattern of doctors seeming to believe that patients are aiming to trick them and aren’t to be believed. Too often, if a problem isn’t within the doctor’s immediate wheelhouse it’s treated as fake. Too often, doctors are just kind of mean.
I have found that honestly, the best indicator that a doctor will help me is not where they went to school or their specific status - it’s whether they listen and, frankly, act like a normal human being during the clinic visit.
At this point I’ve been to more specialists than I can count. I prefer whenever possible to have my primary manage my care even for my rare disorders because he treats me with respect and is willing to admit he doesn’t know things & so actually looks up new information for me
Just thoughts in response to helping a sibling with getting proper healthcare this week. She’s been treated so badly, that seeing my kind doctor nearly brought her to tears. This illustrates the broader issue too well.
Anyway thanks for reading.
