/x #Oder river #trawling campaign day 1. Leaving early to hit the 2 ship locks on the way in time & arrive at #Eisenhuettenstadt tonight. Sad to leave @RadingerJ behind this time. It's freezing, did I pack right? And should make more coffee? #freshwater #fish #ecology #phdlife
Almost a bit meditative: hours over hours of sailing on the rather monotonous Oder-Spree-Kanal.
/x: Some metrics: we're attempting 30-40 hauls in total, at 1km length each. At its entrance, our net is approx. 25m wide and 1.8m high, resulting in a sampled water volume of 1.8 million m3, equivalent to roughly 720 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
/x: Our starting point tomorrow is in #EisenhĂĽttenstadt, a town founded as a socialist "planned community" and still remaining famous for its steel production (its name translates to something like "town of iron ore processing"). It's furnaces are still active and quite a sight.
/x: Fun fact: Because the artificial canal we've been on all day is actually crossing a #watershed ( #Elbe to #Oder catchment) at very different water levels the last ship lock we're passing today lowers us ~14 meters. That's, like, almost 4 S-Bahn cars put on top of each other!
/x: Good morning from the town of iron ore processing everyone! Sun's rising, its very cold, we just announced ourselves to the local authorities for final clearance and our gear is ready. Time to #fish! #freshwater #ecology
/x: Just in case you need to know; This time lapse is showing how to lose and recover a torn fishing net - you're welcome. The upside: the Shannon #diversity index of our hauls so far is as high as it gets. *wink wink*
Well, plenty more #fish... Hopefully.
/x: done for the day. Sampling summary: don't mention it.. A few riverine fish, a gazillion branches and a wrecked net. But what a beautiful river! #letitflow
/x: #fish #diversity of the first day (20 hauls in total) was actually quite high (we even caught a wonderful barbel), only abundances were behind expectations. Tomorrow we'll be joined by a TV crew of the rbb, stay tuned for more.
/x: great 2nd day. We caught barbel, #whitefish, #pikeperch, bream and several #catfish, the biggest being 177 cm at 33 kg. Pic shows #rbb camera team, the ship's crew and a local commercial fisherman significantly speeding up the process of patching yet another damaged net.
/x: Aaah, nothing beats a long, hot shower after a hard day of wo... Wait what? 🥶
/x: last #fishing day: cold, substantially higher biomass and large individuals, although at the expense of another destroyed net (I know, right?). No chance to take fish pics during work, but we documented landing one of the haul. ETA at @LeibnizIGB: Friday late afternoon.
/x: On our way back home were taking the boat lift in #Niederfinow. The 4290 ton 85x12x2.5m trough of this 90 y/o bad boy lifts us 36 meters into the #Oder- #Havel-Kanal. Really cool: no matter what goes in, the lifted weight is always the same. A truly impressive contraption.
/x: Our last morning was by far the coldest. We actually broke through some ice on the way out but were rewarded with a spectacular sunrise just as we crossed the #Havel lakes north of #Berlin. All remaining fish are taken care of and we're looking forward to get back home.
