During the US-backed, 2016 witch hunt against the Brazilian left, PT only elected one mayor in a city over 200,000. Tomorrow it has 15 candidates running in the 2nd round elections in Brazil`s 57 largest cities - more than any other party. pt1 https://tinyurl.com/yxlntd6s
PT candidates are running in: Contagem (MG), Cariacica (ES), Santarém (PA), Caxias (RS), Pelotas (RS), Diadema (SP), Guarulhos (SP), Feira de Santana (BA), Vitória da Conquista (BA), Recife (PE), Juiz de Fora (MG)
Mauá (RJ), Anapolis (GO), Vitoria (ES) & S. Gonçalo (RJ)
The Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL) has only elected one big-city mayor in its 15 year history, but tomorrow it has two candidates in the running, Guilherme Boulos in São Paulo and Edmilson Rodrigues in Belem.
The big story for PSOL is housing movement leader Guilherme Boulos in São Paulo. Fake left actors in the international media framed Boulos as someone who could fragment the Brazilian left during the coup, but he is a faithful friend to Lula and is running with the PT's support.
In Recife, Pop. 1.5 Million, Marilia Arreas (PT) is neck and neck with deceased ex- governor Eduardo Campos` son João, 27, (PSB). The final push has gotten ugly, with Campos' camp making sexist insinuations and accusing the PT of "Christophobia".
Another big race tomorrow is in the birth place of the World Social Forum and Participatory Budgeting, Porto Alegre. Despite sexist attacks from her opponent, Communist Party candidate Manuela D'Ávila (in photo with Lula), has opened a 2% lead over Sebastian Melo (MDB).
In Rio Bolsonaro ally, prosperity gospel preacher and incumbent Mayor Marcelo Crivella is trailing 68-32 in the latest poll to Eduardo Paes. As mayor, Crivella tried to destroy Carnaval "in the name of Jesus". Center-right Former Mayor Paes is a huge Carnaval afficionado.
Bottom line: 1) the center right parties tied to elites that have run Brazil for 500 years are making the biggest gains; 2) Bolsonaro and his allies are losing ground; 3) The left will make some gains in big cities; and 4) PT is still the major player on the Brazilian left.
In Fortaleza (pop. 2.6 million), capital of 2018 center left presidential candidate Ciro Gomes home state of Ceara, fellow party member Jose Sarto, with PT support, leads by 61%-39% over right wing military police captain Wagner Gomes (PROS) in the latest polls.
