The whole point of "Schitt's Creek" is that obscene wealth has kept the Rose family from ever having to develop empathy for other people. You're supposed to hate them at the beginning. The show is about them learning to become normal caring humans. They grow over time.
Someone needs to put this disclaimer up everywhere "Schitt's Creek" is streaming/airing. So many people start the show and quit because they hate the characters, which completely misses the point. They don't understand it's a show about growth because no one told them!
There isn't really a season you can tell them to skip to where the whole "Schitt's Creek" cast is perfectly loveable, because there's some empathy-less moments in every episode. And again, that's the point. Growth isn't uniform perfect all at once. It's steps forward and back.
We're all constantly learning how to be our best selves. And I love how "Schitt's Creek" uses this extreme example of riches-to-rags to showcase this as one of the best parts of being human.
If you hate the Rose family in the first episode of "Schitt's Creek": GOOD! That's what makes their character development pay off so sweetly later on. The "Simply The Best" dance is so much more moving when you know it's David's first time really caring about another person. 🌟
