Been thinking about this a lot lately

One of the key points in @racheljwelcher 's fantastic book is that we sold purity to youth by promising reward. We shifted the point of obedience from "worship of God" to personal benefit.

But I think we can expand that concept 1/2
For years I have felt like a salesman as a pastor - selling people morality and dangling personal benefit as the payoff.

"If you act good, it will benefit you"

That line turns Pastors into Karma salesmen and we need to knock it off.

We obey because it's what God asked-period.
Bonus tweet:

It doesn't mean that it WONT benefit us. Many times it does.

But that is not WHY. we obey God and live according to his teachings as an act of Worship.

And any personal benefit (or detriment) is secondary.
