Seriously, we deserve better than this. Our local news does a great job pretending to look out for the public. "On Your Side," " Problem Solvers:" it's all a facade. This summer has exposed a news media that's lazy, contemptible, and frankly not doing their job as journalists https://twitter.com/AlexOxford3/status/1332734700218101760
It would be one thing if this were a matter of corporate entities forcing their will on our local rprtrs. And that's a part of it, absolutely. There's journos out there doing the best they can given the situation they're in. But that's not the whole story....
Too often, there have been local reporters responding rudely to our genuine concerns. To posting mugshots: "It's in the public record." To not documenting police abuse "We can't be everywhere at all times." These aren't mistakes or miscommunications; this is dismissal.
@NBC12 et al, they miss things. Obvious things. Reclamation Square was FILLED with gas that was seen for miles. NBC12's story on it made no mention of gas. It's not just that tho. They'll mislead too. Chyrons saying "Richmond Unrest" or "violent weekend" create a narrative.
It creates a narrative of protesters wrecking the city and hurting people. Not only is this false, the opposite is true. And these were the chyrons that aired consistently *all summer.* In reality, RPD, VSP; they would agitate the crowd and bait a reaction, then "cracking down"
And again, it would be one thing if these were isolated incidents. They're not. As @JLJLovesRVA showed in his excellent thread on #stopthesteal, RPD commiserated with the violent, armed protesters *about us.*
