The thing I appreciate about @MistressSnowPhD’s piece is the class indictment.
I’ve said on more than one occasion that my H.S. classmates who went on to strip in some of Atlanta’s hottest clubs made more in their 20s than I’ll make in 20 years (base) in academe BC it’s true.

Academics without national book wins and best sellers... you know, those who depend on their base salary as their main income? They’ll never make more than folks in adult entertainment.
We can be prudes— or we can acknowledge academe doesn’t pay people their value.

In most fields, the more expertise and experience you have, the better your salary. That’s true to a degree in academe. But everyone has some expertise so it’s considered a baseline— something that is uncompensated. Despite disparities in getting to that same base.
Folks who grew up poor and working class have two choices:
Accept the money they’re making in academe as more than their families ever made & just be happy...
OR Hustle, all the time, in hopes a book or resource lands on the public or academe elite so they can get gigs.

I know way too many brilliant academics who are severely underpaid but feel like they make a lot because it’s double or triple their parents salary.
But is it?
I’m not trying to tell people to be unhappy, but I am noting that’s how the class power divide is maintained.

I know someone who took a 30k pay cut as an administrator to be a faculty member because it’s considered more prestigious.
Do you know why he could?
Upper middle class family.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch.

Low income academics produce so much work, often while working multiple jobs and gigs to make things work.
Imagine if we didn’t have to worry about money. The space it would free up for critically thinking about our work. To just be one with our teaching.
