There's often a little bit more than meets the eye to picture, so I thought I'd share some behind the scenes information about one of my favourite pictures from Bahrain, this pit stop image of the #97 Vantage (thread)
The team practice pit stops throughout the weekend, but often they won't be wearing their full kit, so the only real chance to get a 'proper' pit stop picture is in the race, although I'll often use pit stop practice to run through where I'm going to stand so I know what
I can get away with come race day without getting in the team's way. This image was taken on a 14mm lens, so I'm very close to the crew at this point. The race started at 14.00, the GTE cars pit around every 60mins, the sun dipped behind the grandstand at around 15.30 so I
knew my only chance to capture a pit stop with the sun flare was the first stop of the race, around 15.00. With this in mind I compromised my start shot so I could get back from my start location to the garage, get changed into my mandatory fire resistant overalls and
into the pit lane with the team, leaving a bit of time to spare in case of a safety car period which would mean the car's box early. Logistics out the way, and once in position it's then a case of concentrating on exposure, focal point and composition to get the picture I had
envisioned. After all the preparation I still needed a bit of luck, no photographers, camera crew or officials wandering into the frame, and the team hitting their marks perfectly.
I wouldn't know if I'd got the shot until much later that evening, as with sun set at 17.30 it was back out on track to make the most of golden hour.
