serious PSA: trauma isn’t just something you put away. it rewires our brains to peak vigilance, creating new rules of operation in order to survive. but once this passes, those new rules will remain & can & probably will interfere w/daily life bc they’re not fitted for “normal.” https://twitter.com/ireneista/status/1331828191221092354
to reach a place of healing, a profound amount of engagement has to be done, both individually & collectively, & that work is HARD. our brains have remade themselves, & now we have to undo all that deeply embedded change. & we can’t do it all at once, & sometimes we go backward.
it hurts bc the pain is brought to the surface & demands to be confronted if it is to ever be healed. it’s terrifying & overwhelming, & it feels impossible to overcome bc it’s complicated & takes a long ass time.
that’s just what trauma IS. that’s how it WORKS. & it SUCKS.

however.
healing is possible. it will be some of the most difficult work of our lifetimes, but we can. i speak from personal experience that what had once put me in danger of suicide no longer haunts me. it’s taken a long time, but it doesn’t get to tell me what to do anymore.

so that’s our task, for ourselves, each other, & those who come after us. it will be difficult & scary at times, but if we want to have health & peace, the work of healing is utterly necessary. & when one of us is doing ok, we can support the one who is not.
2020 will be a lot to come back from, but we can do it. i know we can.
love you all.
love you all.
