FE6 is an extremely interesting game as both a follow up to FE5 and just a game in the series. FE5 prides itself on its many complex systems and mechanics all at work overlapping. FE6 is wildly simplistic in its design, but its this simple design that framed the series structure
One of the things I love about FE6 is just how simple it is. It knows its not some earth shattering narrative that'll shake the JRPG genre. Its a simple political drama with twists and turns as you travel all around a very distinct and interesting world
Thats something I want to expand upon, the world. Elibe is my favorite continent in FE (judral close 2nd) due to how cool and memorable its locations are and how built up the lore is. There's something about the autumn colors of the Western Isles that always sticks with me
The music in the game, all though the least impressive of the GBA games is still great and they accel in making you feel like Roy's army is fighting a massive, awful war. Songs like For the Commander, Within the Magnificent Nature, and Shadows Approach are great at showing that
Now for one of the biggest examples people give of how much they don't like FE6, Roy. I have a LOT to say on this so bear with me. Roy is a super interesting character in concept and a pretty solid one in execution. I'll try to explain best why he's my favorite character in FE
Roy is a 15 year old thrusted into the arms of war unsure of himself. He's like Marth but the huge difference is that an inciting incident has happened to Marth, the fall of his father's kingdom. What makes Roy interesting is how he tries to PREVENT that from happening
Roy is suppose to feel weak and get his courage throughout the game. Is it a negative for the game if the game has a "bad lord" gameplay wise? Just something to think about. I'll probably make another post just for Roy tho so I suggest watching this GREAT video from a year ago
FE6 also has a infamously unbalanced unit spread, but IMO unbalanced FE games are so much fun. If you like all the characters being crazy good like PE then great! But I love being able to turn a zero like sophia into a hero by the endgame.
FE6 feels like a nostalgic classic to me. Like I grew up playing it when I didnt at all. But its solid gameplay, fun maps, grand scale, and general groundwork it set for the series is something I hugely respect. With a Lord I could relate to a lot when I first played
Theres so much more I could say but ill leave it here for today. I might do more of these for other games in the series too if demand is there! Thank you so much for your time and listening to me talk about one of my favorite games!
Its not a perfect game, but its a game thats close to my heart and my favorite FE game. If you have any feelings towards FE6, please share them with me here be it praise or criticism. I'd love to hear what you guys have to say. Just keep it friendly :)
