Note: @WashArchbishop is the 1st Black cardinal from the US & a majority white nation. In 1960, Laurean Rugambwa became the 1st African cardinal in the modern era. In 2014, Chibly Langlois of Haiti & Kelvin Felix of St. Lucia became the 1st Black cardinals from the Americas.
@WashArchbishop carries w/ him a 455-year old tradition of Catholicism that has always known that #BlackLivesMatter

It is a tradition that gave the modern world its first Roman Catholic sisterhoods freely open to women and girls of African descent in the Oblate Sisters of Providence in Baltimore in 1828 and the Sisters of the Holy Family in New Orleans in 1842. #CatholicHistoryIsBlackHistory
It also matters that Cardinal Gregory currently leads a archdiocese that was once a former seat of power of the #USCatholic Church's slaveholding elite. Note: @WashArchdiocese was originally a part of the @archbalt.
