Okay folks! It's the content none of you have been waiting for: a pandemic rewatch of my first television love: Remington Steele! Four and a quarter seasons, will they or won't they tension, 80s fashions, beautiful leads - what's not to love? #RemingtonSteele
First up: The Pilot: License to Steele (all shows have Steele in title). We meet Laura Holt, PI, who has invented a masculine boss named Remington Steele because no one would hire a female detective. We feel you, Laura!
Laura has been hired to protect some gems called Royal Lavulite which was classified as the rarest gem in 1980 (and RS debuted in 1982, so very on trend!) http://content.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,955002,00.html
She works with Murphy Michaels (the dude from North and South, pretty cute!) who is clearly into her but who she is not interested in. So focused on her work.
That is until HE walks in... (pretending to be a South African agent named Ben Pearson, but with his British accent...) I'd be too distracted to notice too.
One of the best scenes in this episode is when Laura and "Ben" share their first drink in a hotel bar: he buys her a magnum of Champagne and they have a sparkly, double-entendre filled conversation about sexism.
Great snappy dialogue, great sexual tension, great chemistry right off the bat.
Uh-oh, the "real" Ben Pearson just showed up. And Murphy is not a fan of this other guy.
The scene where Laura discovers that "Ben" is a thief who has wormed his way into her life to steal the gems is priceless.
But damn, this fake Remington Steele IS charming.
But who is he anyway? The search his room and find five passports, all in names of people Humphrey Bogart played in the movies (Richard Blaine - Casablanca, Michael O'Leary etc.). Laura is DISTRESSED.
She's stuck, though. The client thinks he's Remington Steele, there are real bad guys after the gems and he's offered to help get catch them. Can she trust him? (Obv. no, Laura!) But, but .... he is SO charming, and very convincing too ...
They catch the bad guys! (Two silly dudes who like stabbing people - whatever) Now it's time to say goodbye. He'll go wherever the gems travel next, but he's enjoyed being Remington Steele, if only he didn't have this crime to commit he might relish the role on a permanent basis.
Next morning, Laura in the limo (don't ask, RS has a LIMO okay, just go wth it) waiting to escort the gems, but wait, they've been stolen! Was it HIM? No, it was the client! Laura & whoever he is team up! (& have a cute fight over who is going to drive the golf cart)
They catch him! Remington Steele and "unidentified woman" are in the press! But he's gone now, he's not coming back and ... well, Laura can go on pretending that he's a real person...
But wait ... someone's in RS's office! It's him! He suddenly had nothing to do in San Francisco & so here he is pretending to be Steele. And thus the premise is set up: she's invented someone and then he shows up and drives her crazy, tho she looks pretty happy in this episode...
