When Kita Shinsuke receives the captain jersey, he cries.

He cries because he's been doing things properly and he's been doing them everyday, he cries because repetition, consistency, care just feel right, he cries because it doesn't matter if the gods are watching him or not,
it doesn't matter if the past is gone and all yesterdays are now muscle.

For today, Kita Shinsuke achieved a result.

But for him, today is not what matters most, for him results are nothing but a byproduct of the small things he does everyday.
And still, lifting the captain jersey towards the sky and taking a look at it, Kita Shinsuke wonders if it counts as a result, he wonders why his chest feels so full of happiness, he wonders why a temporary hobby like volleyball can move his soul so much
And he wants to keep the memory of it, because he is just like that, giving more value to the process than the results.

Maybe also this result is part of the process.

Maybe it is not.

Aran is there to tell him it doesn't matter.

Aran is right.
Kita Shinsuke is proud of his team, proud of his friends, proud of his result too. And it's with pride that he wears it.

Kita Shinsuke wears his jersey in the same way he does everything else: properly
When Miya Atsumu receives the captain jersey, he cries.

He cries because it is Kita Shinsuke who is handing it to him, he cries because he has been playing volleyball with the same fire people commonly associate with love, he cries because he doesn't know if he deserves it.
After all what has he ever done for the team? He has been playing for himself, with his brother the only thing to anchor him to the ground, he has been sitting alone during water breaks.

Then why him? Why him? Why him?
He tries to ask Kita for an explanation, but his old captain just tells him "you already know"

It's a matter of trust.

Kita Shinsuke trusts him, his coach trusts him, his team trusts him.

They all believe in his passion, his flame, his love.
Because some people play volleyball in the same way hungry people eat their food. And once you get a bite you just want more.

Miya Atsumu wants his team to want more.

Miya Atsumu wants them to give him more.

Miya Atsumu wants to help his friends aim for more
Because yesterday is gone, and all the things he didn't do to deserve that jersey don't matter, all he has to focus on now is what he can do today, to improve and to make others improve.

Miya Atsumu doesn't need things like memories.

So he reaches his hands toward the uniform
He bows deeply to Kita Shinsuke, he says his thank you.

And on his third year of high school Miya Atsumu wears his jersey like today is all that matters.

Miya Atsumu wears his jersey in the same way he plays volleyball: with love
