Several years ago, I was working at the job I have loved the most in my career. I had a counterpart in another group who I met with regularly. He was new to the job and the subject matter. However, he had strong views about me & the work #16days 1/n https://twitter.com/un_women/status/1332649198530015235
We were polite to each other but didn’t get along. We certainly didn’t see eye to eye. He regularly tried to work around me or throw me under the bus to our respective bosses. He had a driving need to dominate me in every encounter #16days 2/n
After one particularly contentious meeting, as the boardroom cleared out, he demanded to speak to me. He was angry, his face becoming redder by the moment. I was willing to talk but not back down. He advanced on me until I was backed up against a wall #16days 3/n
I had my hands up, trying to keep a precious few inches between us. He was yelling. His face becoming more flushed, spit flying from his lips. He raised his clenched fists up and I suddenly realized he was going to hit me. #16days 4/n
I stopped speaking immediately & tried to figure out how to get out. There was a buzzing in my ears & I was quaking on the inside. I tried to make myself small. He must have seen my fear because he took two steps back, smirked and marched out of the room, victorious. #16days 5/n
I couldn’t stop shaking. He didn’t like me being smart, he didn’t like me knowing more than he did, and he didn’t like me dominating him in a meeting so he came after me to take back his power #16days 6/n
I reported him. I told my boss I didn’t feel comfortable meeting alone with him and that I wouldn’t. The agreed-to solution by his boss and mine? I would take someone with me to all meetings. #16days 7/n
The end result? I left for a new job within 3 months. I had not wanted to leave - I loved that job & my team. The work was meaningful to me. But I couldn’t stay. As for him? There were zero consequences. The only consequences were mine. Fin #16days
