At least once a week I think of this nearly 20-year old essay about school shootings and how it predicted neatly the world we have today.
This piece gets a few things wrong—it's not bullying that leads to mass shooters, for instance. But it's correct that we have failed to create a sense of community justice that addresses the central question. You can read it here: https://homepages.rpi.edu/~brings/shoot3.pdf
The pandemic broke a disturbing trend of terroristic mass murder by young men with far-right tendencies. It remains to be seen if the break was merely a pause or the start of a downturn.
