Annual Richmond draw-off is done, Richmond Lock closed once more & river levels now back to normal even though the Thames is still tidal up to Teddington Lock. When I was filming here in the week a woman leant down from the bridge & shouted ‘ARE U LIZ? I FOLLOW U ON TWITTER!’ đŸ‘ŒđŸŒ
Some highlights from this year’s Richmond draw-off. These Egyptian Geese were my crew and followed me around the whole time. HONKING tyrants.
Always a joy to see the old Tudor jetty emerging, like Atlantis, from the river bed. Not the greatest of draw-offs in 2020 due to spring tides/heavy rain but enough of a difference for this to be visible. Vessels would have brought Tudor & Stuart monarchs here to Richmond Palace
Swans guarding the remains of the old Georgian jetty, very little of it visible this year because insufficient drop in river levels but you can see a bit of it peeking out of the water. Boats & barges would have once brought goods here to unload at the Richmond breweries nearby.
Some beautiful bivalves visible on the foreshore during the Richmond draw-off, the cleanliness of the water has improved hugely over the years (but still too much plastic being found đŸ˜€) This is a Duck Mussel (Anodonta anatina), one of six species of U.K. freshwater molluscs.
A few little finds made during this year’s draw-off. War grade Vulcanite bottle stopper (from a fizzy drinks bottle) the centre scooped out as rubber was precious so needed to be preserved for the war effort (making gas masks etc.) Also some marbles & a brown clay cooking bean.
Rare chance to see under Richmond Bridge (Grade 1 listed built in 1774-1777, tolls charged until 1859.) I tried to clear out as much rubbish as I could from here but the bike defeated me. People who chuck these in the river should be placed in the stocks & pelted with tomatoes.
Walking home along the Thames Path from R’mond to Twickers has been a joy during these last few weeks as we slide inexorably into the dark & difficult winter months. And the sight of this sparkly beauty berthed near Hammerton’s Ferry at dusk lifts my heart & fills me with hope.
