(THREAD) People seem to be upset about steppenwolf's "new" design. They throw criticisms such as "big gray villain, overly complicated design, Megatron looking, bayformers decepticon". I understand and respect these criticisms.

BUT

I beleive otherwise, let me explain:

Firstly, I would like to acknowledge the fact that steppenwolf at one point was indeed drawn with a similar design to that of MEGATRON.

But it was just a concept out of the many others. Snyder strayed away from that and gave it a face.

People also have the criticism " It's just another grey villain" or "it should be colorful/comic accurate"

To that I say: That's entirely subjective if you dislike something that looks "gray (silver)"

However, steppy may be gray

BUT

he's also REFLECTIVE

Ok? So what if he's reflective?

Well his armor being reflective adds a whole new layer of colorization depending on the setting. As you can see

one shot he's part silver/black and another he's just silver (using the steppy shots we have so far, we've yet to see him in action)

Now yeah, the colors silver, gey, black are not the most appealing but looking at something reflective like a diamond is attractive as hell (entirely subjective).

Whether you like/dislike Zack Snyder you have to agree: Objectively speaking, he's excellent at vfx/visuals

What about comic accuracy? Well, sometimes a person has a different idea of how a character should look. Let's be honest here, no one gives a shit about steppy, plus he's goofy as hell (Jack kirby design).

What about new 52 design? well ya'll woulda still complained

Who is steppenwolf?

Well, he's Darkseid's uncle (yes and apparently he looks human in the comics

) and a general in apokolips. What is his character? Well, he has no characteristics in the comics besides serving darkseid and looking like a spartan.

In ZSJL, it will be the 1st time we see steppy get a character arc in any medium (confirmed by Zack). Whatever it turns out to be will still be better than anything that came before.

In addition, we'll get to see steppy move normaly again. What do I mean?

Well before Zack was forced to compromise and create Geoffenwolf, Zack and the vfx team had already done many concept art, previs, facial contextualization etc

They had planned out SPIKY STEPPENWOLF'S movements and interactions which they were then forced to insert the Geoff Johns Design into making his movement, physics and overall vfx feel very off, much like a toy (without posture, clay, squeezed into shots, seemingly small)

Moreover, it had miscontextualized anatomy such as being able to support aquaman's weight, resembled Liam neeson much more than he did Ciaran Hinds (who steppy was played by) him ramming into aquaman and leaving him intact instead of peircing him, his feet enable him to jump high

Weird as shit posture, uncanny face (these shots are untampered with)

Snyder confirmed that steppy's armor is an organism that shifts, moves and retracts with steppy's emotions as well as defensive purposes such as catching arrows or deflecting them (something Josstice league steppy did which I thought was weird). We'll get too see him naked too.

I think I'm done with my steppenwolf defense for now. If you still want "comic accuracy" or "colors" you could either watch Josstice league which had a pretty CB accurate steppy design with the skull belt and everything.
