Auburn vs Gonzaga film breakdown: 1st Half

Good look for Cambridge off the dribble penetration and kick out from Flanigan.
Cambridge has shown to be much more effective when we can get him consistent set ups and find him in his spots

Turbo is a tough shot maker and I'll say that all year long. Great weapon to have down the stretch. I'll get to a few areas I'd like to see him improve on later in the thread
Turbo is more of a "disruptor" on the defensive end than he gets credit for. On ball and iso stuff needs work, but this kind of play is great to see out of him
Our length was a positive factor for us all game, even against a team like Gonzaga.
Great instincts from Cardwell here with the steal.
That's a 6'11 250 lb Freshman Center that didn't get to play his senior year making that read and play. He's gonna be very good very soon.

More disruptive length. Wasn't great rotation and communication here. Just pure length forcing a 30 footer. Great foundation for Coach Pearl to build on.
I still think it's pretty clear that Justin Powell would be optimized in an off ball role at the 2, but this is fantastic initiation.
Penetrate on the switch to get the ball below the FT line, find the secondary distributor, and hit the open man on the off ball action. Bucket.

Stretch is an absolute force in the paint on the defensive end. I suspect his playing time will increase if we get Sharife back.
On the other end, this pick and pop middy game out of Stretch could be a really interesting development. He hasn't taken many jumpers in the first two games, but he could help our spacing out a lot if he's able to knock them down efficiently, even at a low clip
This is an area that just has to be tightened up. Really poor communication here off an opposite baseline in bounds. Not great.
The good news is this is one of those very coachable mistakes that can be worked out with time. I expect us to improve a lot here throughout the year.

. @jtpowell241 is a big guard that can shoot lights out, folks. I'm sure you all know that by now though.
BEAUTIFUL defense here. Chris Moore forces Suggs to give the ball up fighting over a screen. Powell fights over the next screen to force a tough mid range fader. Love it.
JP's been roasting dudes with this strong spin move for years now. Makes it look easy too.
I like the overall movement before the drive here too. Lot going on with the baseline in bounds call and JP takes advantage of the scrambling D after some nice swings.

More Justin Powell making things happen.
This kind of disruption out of our guards will be an important factor in our success moving forward. Like the potential they've flashed so far.

Javon Franklin!! Great to see him healthy. Looks like he's still getting up to speed a bit, but he's a hell of an athlete.
Nice slip screen here for the easy flush after a shoveled DHO look

This is how slim the margin for error is against a team like Gonzaga. This defense is probably good enough to bother a lot of teams. Communication around the screen breaks down for a split second and we're toast.
Again, though, these are issues that can and will be corrected.

Need to see more of this out of Turbo. He beats his man off the dribble often, but is still working on that craftiness around the rim.
Nice job exploding to the hole and drawing the foul here. More consistency in aggressively attacking downhill will do wonders for him.

Allen Flanigan has been playing out of his mind on both ends of the floor. Maybe (probably) got away with a goaltend here but idc. Dude is taking no prisoners out there and I love it.
Remember that slim margin of error I mentioned? We cover it here.
Great communication and instincts from Thor and Stretch switching at just the right instant on the DHO to get a great contest on the deep ball.
The potential is there. Just need more minutes out there together.

Like I mentioned earlier, Devan Cambridge is at his best when he's got a consistent set up and he's finding his spots. Improvisation has shown to get him into trouble. Not *entirely* his fault here as no one really showed for him, but still an ill advised shot
Pretty common occurrence in this game:
Good D. Better O.
Nice positioning and contest from Stretch. Timme just gets buckets.

Love this sequence from Turbo.
Great instincts jumping the pass and an aggressive move to the rim to draw the foul.
This kind of stuff earns you minutes when you play for Bruce Pearl.

Allen Flanigan.
SHEESH.
His confidence on the offensive end is miles ahead of where it was last year, especially from deep.

Inject this entire sequence in my veins.
The potential is all there. This is a beautiful display of our versatility and length.

Good set up on the DHO, found his spot, gets his feet set, aaaand splash.
Devan Cambridge has plenty of potential to be a relatively consistent floor spacer for us. We just have to put him in the best positions to produce.

Ok, sorry, non Auburn tweet. Film nerd coming out here. This is an absolutely absurd move from Jalen Suggs at full speed with a defender like Flanigan in front of him. Just ridiculous.
And he made it look like a walk in the park. Literally. Phew.

Length and athleticism on full display here. We're gonna give smaller teams fits with that press.
End of the clip is more Cambridge getting into trouble improvising. Gotta keep it more consistent with him to optimize his skill set imo.

Length. Versatility. Athleticism. Fantastic communication and team defense. Gimme more.
I'm telling y'all, Cardwell's gonna be a great player. Love what I've seen out of both of our centers.
Tough luck on the block falling right back into Timme's hands, but he plays this really well. A nice high post entry pass didn't make it an easy task either.

Dylan Cardwell, my goodness.
Good initial defense overall. We start to scramble a bit before Cardwell makes a great recovery to demolish Timme at the rim.
Leads to a bucket on the other end before the D can get fully set. Love the attack from Flanigan to finish the sequence.

Chris Moore is laughably strong.
Like what on earth. He was out leveraged by a 6'8 forward on a tough pass to recover to, took the full force of the blow, and the other guy was the one tossed backwards.
Insane.

Love this action off Bruce's classic flex set. Clean ball movement, good spacing, and an easy look for Jamal Johnson.
Nice to get Jamal some different looks at the basket outside of spotting up from deep too. Tends to help shooters like him find some rhythm imo.

This is an example of Turbo beating his man off the dribble, but not being aggressive enough with his attack to make anything happen.
I'd like to see him either finish with a reverse here or stomp on the brakes and force Timme to fly through him for the foul.

A better angle on the block. I promise I'm not picking on Turbo here. I'm just trying to show how close he is to reaching that next level of finishing at the rim.
He's already got the quickness and handle to beat defenders off the dribble. Just gotta find a bit more craftiness.

I'll wrap up the first half with a great sequence on defense as the Zags were trying to score just before the half. Versatility showing all over here.
(Yes, that's 6'6 240 lb Chris Moore shutting down a talented 6'1 180 lb R-Senior guard around a screen on the perimeter)

2nd half film coming tomorrow! This took me a lot longer than I expected, sorry lol
