i think a lot of people on twitter confuse "rehabilitating past bigots" with "sympathizing w/ bigots but not their victims"
one is allowing people who know they've done wrong to do better - the other is bootlicking; begging for the mercy of the boot while ignoring the betrodden

it's absolutely good to hate active bigots. don't enable them by sympathizing with their violence. meet them with equal anger, if not more, at every step.
but don't deny the genuinely penitent their growth, either. if you can't forgive them, that's fine, but let others do so.

if we excluded every leftist who's ever perpetuated bigotry, we'd have maybe a handful of leftists, tops. i definitely wouldn't be here, for instance.
leftism should be an ideology of constantly striving to be better, not excluding anyone who ever wasn't good enough.

trying to make leftism into an objective standard of good just ends up excusing bigotry - because *everyone* is bigoted, and as such any standard we make shares our failings. it takes a constant willingness to grow and adapt to new information. we are *all* in rehabilitation.
