5AM thread about FromSoftware games I've been playing cuz I can't sleep đŸ„Ž
I really love Bloodborne! Dark Souls and Bloodborne are each satisfying in their own ways, but maybe I prefer Bloodborne overall? I still have a long way to go in the latter, so let's see.
Dark Souls 2 was the first I ever played in the series, followed by 1 and now 3. I think 2 has some beautiful moments, but I can sorta see why people dunk on it the most. I love Majula though and have fond memories of the game overall.
Like everyone else on the internet, I love the connectivity of 1. The sense of scale is so impressive – 2 has some of these moments, but 1 does a better job of making me feel like a tiny person in a huge world.
I kinda hated the first two areas of 3! I found the monk enemies to be bland, hated the first unskippable boss in what is essentially a tutorial area (I know DS games don't mess around but gimme a break), couldn't stand High Wall of Lothric...
Like the area is (IMO) kinda dull, rather flat, enemies are standard hollow soldiers for the most part...there were a couple cute shortcuts...nice sense of scale I guess, but we've seen this kind of area in DS games before.
I get to Undead Settlement however, and I feel like I'm playing an entirely different game! Lots of clever shortcuts, branching paths, loads of NPCs, secrets, verticality, amazing vantage points. Enemies are weird and varied!
My favourite parts of DS games are when you end up exploring areas that you'd previously assumed were just background scenery. Almost feels like you're boundary breaking, like "I can't believe I made it here"! Undead Settlement is giving me a lot of this.
I'm just about to fight the boss in Undead Settlement, and I'm surprised how much and how quickly my opinion of DS3 has shifted. I think I love it now! But the opening areas left me unimpressed. What does everyone else think? I'm curious â˜ș
