Daniel Dumilele, known As MF DOOM is one of the most unique, creative, talented and iconic underground hip hop artists of all time.
The way he created such conceptually interesting and unique universes rapping from the perspective of so many different characters showcased a level of creativity that had never been seen before from a rapper.
With his dark delivery and layered wordplay stacked with entendres’ over many years MF DOOM put together one of the greatest hip hop discographies of all time.
Here’s an Analysis of the MF DOOM S career and why he’s one of the greatest ever.
Here’s an Analysis of the MF DOOM S career and why he’s one of the greatest ever.
Daniel Dumile was originally born in England in the year 1971 and grew up in Long island.
By the age 17 he was going by the name Zev Love X, and Alongside his other brother DJ subloc and an MC called Rodan the young rapper formed a hip hop trio called KMD.
By the age 17 he was going by the name Zev Love X, and Alongside his other brother DJ subloc and an MC called Rodan the young rapper formed a hip hop trio called KMD.
However Rodan ended up leaving the group and an MC named Onyx the birthstone kid replaced him. While he didn’t have a super long career with KMD DOOM proved an immense amount of technical skill in their 1991 debut MR HOOD.
However, after the release of MR Hood His brother and DJ sadly passed away and their sophomore release Black Bastards was scrapped by the label.
However The album Black Bastards was eventually released later in 2001 with very dark and socially relevant themes Black Bastards really showed a completely different person to the DOOM people would later know.
It was much more traditional delivery wise compared to the DOOM we know. However it was stacked with moving verses and socially relevant lyricism.
With Black Bastards We saw the death of KMD and the birth of a new character
Zev Love X was becoming MF DOOM.

After KMD’s sophomore record was scrapped in the aftermath of his brothers death DOOM became homeless for a long time. DOOM had almost given up on hip hop
However He finally returned 5 years later to release his debut as a completely new character, Operation DOOMsday.
Operation DOOMsday remains one of the most influential debut hip hop albums of all time.
Operation DOOMsday remains one of the most influential debut hip hop albums of all time.
Seeing DOOM quite literally become a different person captured the attention of so many hip hop fans with such intriguing skits, heavy rhyme schemes and detailed wordplay MF DOOM played the villain role in such a unique way.
DOOM played the villain role in such a unique way. Operation DOOMsday introduced DOOM to the world in such a intriguing way As he proved to be an MC with so much personality.
DOOM returned in 03 with his first full length album Take Me To Your Leader On this project DOOM adapted to a completely different personality entirely under the name King Geedorah. The concept was genius as we saw DOOM rapping as King Geedorah, a 3 headed godzilla like creature.
Throughout the album we see him portrayed as a violent space alien with The album title Take Me to your Leader referring to Geedorah’s aspirations to take over the world. Take Your Leader proved yet again how unique DOOM was as an MC as he executed a concept so well.
Take Me to your leader was critically acclaimed and DOOM was beginning to be recognised as one of the best rappers to do it as he brought forward a style which was unlike anything people had seen before.
This album Marked the beginning of his prolific run as throughout the next couple of years DOOM would drop so many high quality albums in such a short amount of time.
In The same year DOOM returned again with yet another persona releasing Vaudeville Villain under the name Victor Vaughn. Victor Vaughn was another Alius portraying an envious and sour young villain.
Victor Vaughn was DOOMS arch nemesis and lived a bitter life as he felt he had the power to do everything DOOM does better. In an album which is very beloved amongst fans it included some of his darkest delivery and best storytelling adapting to a different alias so convincingly
One of the stand out tracks Can I Watch is one of his best tracks ever released and showcases his unmatched ability to tell a dark and detailed story from different perspectives.
Such a creative track almost like that of a movie scene where he uses Apani B to play the role of Nikki Fly offering multiple different perspectives.
Throughout the song Apani B and Victor go verse for verse as a young Victor tells the story Of going on a date with Nikki however, Victor becomes overly keen to quickly pushing her away and he ends up lashing out annoyed with the missed opportunity.
A phenomenal display of his witty storytelling in which we see across this album. All killer no filler As DOOM displays such creativity and humour.
Over a year later DOOM was in the prime of his career as released the most important underground hip hop record of all time alongside Madlib. DOOM and Producer Madlib two titans of their fields joined together to form Madvillain As the two joined forces to take over the world
DOOM and his dark delivery complex rhyme schemes and phenomenal wordplay met Mad Libs unmatched ear for music and detailed sampling In the greatest collab album ever made.
From the iconic intro Accordion where DOOM delivers of the best rhyme schemes of all time over such a unique instrumental to tracks Like Curls and Raid where DOOM delivers such layered and detailed lyricism in such a short amount of time.
Contrasted tracks like Fancy Clown where DOOM tells a story of heartbreak over a beautiful soul sample, and even America's Most Blunted an Ode to The joys of getting high. Madvillany is a flawless album with highlight after highlight
One of the very few perfect rap albums. This not only solidified DOOM by now as one of the best ever to do it but caught the attention of the entire hip hop world as everyone was amazed by his unique style and rhyme schemes.
After The success of Madvillain DOOM remained one of the most well respected and critically acclaimed MC’s at the time. Not long after Madvillain DOOM released a follow up to Vaudeville Villain titled venomous Villain
and while the production was great some aspects of it felt rushed and lyrically he wasn’t as strong.
it still remains very underlooked in DOOMS discog and received nowhere near the amount of publicity as Vaudeville Villain.
However a lot of it is worth checking out.

DOOM had already had the best year of his career releasing Madvillainy venomous Villain and another volume of his herbs&Spices series and he continued his prolific run with the November release of MM Food. His most popular solo album and definitely the most accessible
Produced by DOOM himself MM Food is a record with so much personality. DOOM delivers such unique and witty lyrics, alongside such extravagant production.
The theme makes it such a fun album to listen with all the references to food, cinematic skits and funky samples give the album such a unique listening experience.
From tracks like Beef Rap where DOOM delivers witty bar after bar:
“He wears a mask just to cover the raw flesh
A rather ugly brother with flows that's gorgeous
Drop dead joints hit the whips like bird shit
They need it like a hole in their head or a third tit”.

To tracks Like Rap snitch Knishes with the iconic chorus from MR Fantastik
Rap snitches, telling all their business
Sit in the court and be their own star witness
Do you see the perpetrator? Yeah, I'm right here
Fuck around, get the whole label sent up for years

MM Food is a charismatic, and funky album reminiscent of reading a comic or anime where DOOM provides such a cinematic and visual listening experience in one of the most quotable albums ever.
such a fun and accessible album.
such a fun and accessible album.
The Mouse & The Mask
After the best year of his career DOOM returned with another collaboration project linking up with producer Danger Mouse. Another one of his more underlooked projects however a lot of it is worth checking out. This project was almost like a victory lap.

both DOOM and Danger Mouse were at their peak creatively and the chemistry between the two was fantastic.
With more witty wordplay and tons of Cartoon references on The Mouse& The Mask Hip hop meets cartoons in such an engaging way. Danger Mouse delivered with really solid production and it is DOOM’s most accessible collaborative project and worth checking out.
Throughout his career DOOM had produced a large amount of his music and the beats he produced were being put together into volumes and released year after year in Volumes of Special Herbs and spices. These Volumes were made up of beats,Instrumentals and skits produced by DOOM.
These volumes really showcased his ability as a producer Releasing individual volumes throughout his career. In the year 2006 He compiled all these into Metal fingers Box set.
This set remains a timeless beat tape and is incredibly relaxing to listen to compiling such a wide range of high quality beats,Many of which DOOM had rapped over himself or had been sampled by other rappers.
Pennyroyal is one of my favourite hip hop instrumentals ever
Pennyroyal is one of my favourite hip hop instrumentals ever
After The release of The Mouse and The Mask DOOM had almost disappeared from the hip hop world with no release of music in 5 years however he made a return in 2009 with Born Like This. His most underrated album to date and a cult classic which was beloved amongst diehard fans.
From Songs like That’s That which showcases one of his best lyrical performances ever to tracks like Angelz where MF DOOM and Ghostface killah display their unmatched wordplay.
Born Like This is Easily one of DOOM’s strongest lyrical performances and with such intriguing skits, dark delivery and fantastic production it is such an engaging project.
Born Like This was DOOM’s Last solo release to date however, he did show up on a range of collaboration projects throughout the decade
. His 2012 release JJ DOOM which was a collaboration producer with Jairo Jneirel was a very risky and abstract project and while it is somewhat rough around the edges it’s definitely worth checking out
In 2014 he released a collaboration album with Bishop Neru titled Nehruvian DOOM and while it was interesting to see him work with a newer artist he doesn’t have a huge presence and Rapper Bishop Neru still doesn’t feel fully developed as an MC in a hit or miss record.
His most recent
Czarface Meets Metal Face collab with Czarface, that is made up of Esoteric,7L and Inspectah Deck wu tang MC. This project was received well among fans as DOOM and Deck showcased strong chemistry however it didn’t stand out despite
Lots of good songs.

DOOM had one of the most prolific and genre defying careers hip hop has ever seen His creativity is a skill which very few artists can match, He tells stories, executes concepts and paints pictures in such a unique way and in terms of lyrical talent he is one of the greatest ever
The way he adapted to so many different personalities and embodied every character was exactly what sets him apart from other rappers and makes him so unique.
MF DOOM brings out the joy in music he makes albums not just entertainment or something we listen to but an experience, a journey and a story. DOOM doesn’t just make music he creates characters.
His ability as a producer is easily his most underlooked quality throughout his career from the eccentric production on mm Food,to Operation DOOMsday and the skits and more drawn back production which is reminiscent of an early comic book
And of Course the multiple volumes of metal fingers where DOOM takes us on a journey throughout his career with such a well put together beat tape.
One common misconception is all DOOM does is rhyme which is a terribly incorrect myth spread around the hip hop community.
His heavy rhyme schemes are used as a tool to add large amounts of lyrical detail in such small periods of time, DOOM has an incredible pen game and every little bar has meaning, laced with double entendres.
In terms of Influence what he has done for the underground hip hop world is hugely important with artists including.
Joey bada$$
Capital Steez
Tyler The creator
Earl Sweatshirt
Danny Brown.

Many artists have sampled beats produced by DOOM or sighted him as an influence in interviews or articles. DOOM had a huge impact on shaping the underground hip hop landscape and Legendary New York MC Mos Def was a huge fan.
On top of this The most popular artist of the last decade Drake has posted many times about being a DOOM fan even referring to him as a goat on an instagram post.
Here’s my top 25 songs from DOOM which i recommend checking out if trying to get into DOOM https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5YN0Zcj1ICGnkCOpPF4SXB?si=ukH1knrwSNCsvFZmbzFbzw
MF DOOM is an MC and producer like no other one of the greatest lyricists ever to touch a mic and the most creative hip hop artist of all time. His creativity, wit and lyricism created someone who wasn’t afraid to stand out and be different and his fans loved him for it.
